Song Analysis: Radiohead – Lotus Flower

Last weekend, Radiohead played a Haiti benefit concert at Music Box in the Fonda Theatre in LA. The gig raised a ton of money for the troubled nation, thanks to the tickets only being available to buy through auction. The setlist was a pretty inspired one for a band deep into recording their new album, but it also contained one brand new song, much to the delight of the internet. Well, I say ‘brand new’, it was played by Thom Yorke at his shows with the Eraser Band last October in the same state, but the fact it was played last weekend confirms that it may well be a strong contender for LP8.
Despite early reports that Colin and Jonny Greenwood joined him, it was still a solo Thom song. However, it is quite a gentle string-plucked song, and once you get past the fact that it is slightly similar to Follow Me Around, a ‘lost’ Radiohead classic, it is quite an enjoyable song. The lyrics are typical Yorke, though it may be carrying the same personal influences that featured on In Rainbows (“I will sneak myself into your pocket/Invisible, do what you want, do what you want/I will sink and I will disappear/I will slip into the groove and cut me up and cut me up”). Overall though, it helps build anticipation for the next album quite nicely and will give obsessives something to tide over for at least a month.
