Five Songs: Winter

Snow

I don’t know if you guys in the UK have noticed but it has gotten a bit cold recently has it? I’ve been alive on this planet for twenty one and a half years and have never seen the temperatures get as low as they have done in the last couple of weeks or so. To ‘celebrate’ this fact (though I’m sure if you had important travel plans ruined I doubt you’ll be doing so), here are five songs that have some connection with all things to do with winter.

1. February Stars by Foo FightersWay before Dave Grohl turned into a big softie with his recent acoustic ballads, February Stars was a emotive highlight from an 0therwise overdrive-heavy album and has become one of the band’s best.

2. Velvet Snow by Kings Of LeonYou could debate for hours what they’re alluding to in the title by ‘velvet snow’ but this is old school Kings Of Leon at their best – short and sharp garage-rock gems with raw aggression and some hints of pop sensibilities.

3. In The Cold I’m Standing by M83M83’s breakout album, Before The Dawn Heals Us, was a lot more song-based than his previous records but this absolutely stunning piece of ambience will send shivers down your spine.

4. Snowball In Negative by The Divine ComedyNeil Hannon’s last album was a solid, if not spectacular, bunch of songs and he reached a fragile and tender highpoint with this closing track. From the opening swirls of orchestra to the final crashing piano note it’s a compelling listen.

5. White Winter Hymnal by Fleet FoxesA wildcard in a way, since it doesn’t really sound like winter but more like summer. Either way, it’s a beautiful highlight from their debut album as a choral vocal harmony builds into booming drums and something that seems unified, despite its dark lyrical content.
