Foxy Shazam
If there is any band that can replicate the thrillride of a daredevil, it might well be this band. Eric Nally (vocals), Loren Turner (guitar), Schuyler Vaughn White (keyboards/piano) Daisy (bass), Alex Nauth (vocals, horns), and Aaron McVeigh (drums) are Foxy Shazam. They hail from Cincinnati in the USA and in the early years of their career they made a name for themselves on the local scene and word about their insanity quickly spread. Their music has many different ideas and many different directions yet when you listen to it you notice that it does actually have some sort of path, some sort of narrative, and some sort of pop melody that is hidden amidst all the chaos. Listing what it sounds like could take a while, since it ranges from surf rock, cabaret, heavy rock, carnival, and many other conventional and non-conventional musical styles.
What consists of the band’s recorded output then? The Flamingo Trigger, their debut album, was written and recorded in their first year of formation. It’s an album that keeps you listening and keeps you guessing what direction they’ll take. It’s ridiculously varied and all the more intriguing for it. You do wonder whether or not even they knew what direction the songs were going in. This was then followed by their follow-up, Introducing FOXY. That album was released last year and was produced Casey Bates and if anything it is more focused than The Flamingo Trigger but just as exciting.
More recently they supported The Sounds on their UK tour last month and gained a lot of new fans in the process. Their on stage antics including climbing on each other’s backs, caressing keyboards, throwing instruments everywhere, and doo-wop acapella. They are seasoned professionals on the live circuit and have the whole performance thing nailed to a tee. Sadly, they have no live dates coming up soon in the UK, which is unsurprising considering that it’s almost Christmas. If they come back in the near future, they are a must see.
