50 For 2009: 50-41

50-41

And so it’s time to kick off the 50 For 2009! Here are positions 50-41:

50. Alessi’s Ark – Notes From The Treehouse

Alessi Laurent-Marke, the 19-year-old singer songwriter from London, produced an enjoyable folk album with the help of Bright Eyes member Mike Mogis in Nebraska.

49. The Decemberists – The Hazards Of Love (see original review here)

A completely overblown rock opera from the medieval ages that is a rollercoaster ride, despite its shortcomings.

48. Billy Talent – Billy Talent III (see original review here)

Not to be dismissed by name alone, the third self-titled album by Billy Talent is full of solid rock songs and who doesn’t like a solid rock song?

47. The Phantom Band – Checkmate Savage

An album of real detail and texture that will keep you coming back for more listens in order to fully understand it.

46. The Rakes – Klang (see Sonic Dice review here)

This incredibly brisk and stark third album turned out to be the swansong for The Rakes but they left the music world on a high.

45. Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest

The breakthrough album for Grizzly Bear and worthy of its place in the list  just for the irresistible pop of Two Weeks alone.

44. The Bitter Tears – Jam Tarts In The Jakehouse (see Sonic Dice review here)

A calamitous and ramshackle-natured album that is delightful in its raw nature and its kitchen sink attitude to making songs.

43. Metric – Fantasies (see Sonic Dice review here)

The Canadian rockers self-released this album that contained big songs, big hooks, and a bigger fanbase than before.

42. Yo La Tengo – Popular Songs (see Sonic Dice review here)

A real mixed bag in terms of musical, from Rubber Soul-esque rock to relaxing post-rock, by one of indie music’s most loved bands.

41. Mew – No More Stories…

Forgive them for their ridiculously long album title and you have an album that will make you forget about the world’s troubles.
