The Sounds at the Electric Ballroom

The Sounds

Unfortunately, I’m going to have to make this a quick post because of time constraints but you’ll see a full review on Sonic Dice at some point in the near future. Crazybobbles suggested to me that we should go and see The Sounds, a Swedish five-piece who lean very heavily on the new wave side of rock ‘n’ roll, and sure enough we both went to the Electric Ballroom in Camden on a very blustery evening. Needless to say that his recommendation was a good one as they were very entertaining live. They were obviously well rehearsed and are well into a world tour so they’re hitting their stride now on the live circuit. Here are some highlights in bullet point form:

  • Their set spanned a very efficient hour and a half with material from all three of their albums.
  • Old favourites Ego and Painted By Numbers were among my favourites.
  • Their songs seem to be a lot harder and a lot more aggressive live.
  • Maja Ivarsson is a natural frontwoman. She oozes charisma and confidence.

The best moment though was saved for the encore when they dragged a fan onstage, who happened to travel to this gig all the way from Venezuela, to play cowbell. He was incredibly starstruck and incredibly excited to be there. It kind of warmed my heart to see a genuine fan enjoying the gig, either onstage or offstage.

You can find pictures up on my Flickr. Again, sorry it’s not as detailed as usual but to make up for it you can have a video of Night After Night later in the week. If you were there last night, leave a comment with your thoughts on the show.
