Song Analysis: Them Crooked Vultures – New Fang

Well, this is what all the fuss has been building towards. After all the YouTube previews, surprise summer festival shows, and with a proper UK tour on the horizon, the Them Crooked Vultures album is set to hit the shelves on the 16th November. In the meantime, the band have made a new song publicly available for streaming in full. New Fang, which, intentional or not, may be seen as an attempt to tie themselves in with Halloween, was played on radio for the first time on Monday and news of its arrival was greeted with rapturous excitement.
New Fang doesn’t necessarily disappoint in expectations. It also doesn’t deliver a mind-blowing punch in the guts that you’re expecting with Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, and John Paul Jones. That’s not to say it’s bad though. The track, which is very reminiscent of Songs For The Deaf-era Queens Of The Stone Age does have some great guitar work, especially towards the end when it rocks out with a fantastic-sounding solo. Overall though, having seen a lot of their songs live a couple of months ago, I know for a fact that they have better tracks up their sleeves. It still has me excited though for the album release in two and a half weeks.
