How Do Artists Survive The Music Industry? – Prologue

Broken CD

So, a couple of days ago I had the most dumb idea in the world. After reading some posts made by Zoë Keating and Amanda Palmer on their own respective blogs. I kinda had the idea that I could summarise the issue of ‘what artists need to do to survive the music industry’ in a short but brief 400-word article. I thought that in one short but concise summary I could sum up what is wrong with the industry and how artists should go about making their money.

But then I had the sudden realisation that for an issue like this that it is near-impossible to sum it up in such a short amount of words. There’s so many factors that you have to include in the discussion and they are all almost like a sub-discussion in itself. I then also remembered that it is now two years since Radiohead shook the industry with the announcement of In Rainbows and their ‘pay what you like’ model. It then struck me that I could somehow work this kind of discussion into a retrospective look at the two years since that album.

So, next week on The Musical Chairs, as I explained briefly on the Twitter feed last night, is going to be one long, continuous feature, spread out over separate parts. Many subjects will be touched upon, including the roles of record labels, social networking, the value of a product, and many other aspects. There might even be original video content from yours truly. By the end, we should arrive with a solid conclusion about which direction artists in the industry should be headed.

In the meantime, I thought it would be good to prepare you, the reader, with a selection of recent blog posts and articles worth reading to give you some context. Enjoy:
