Recommend Me: Summer Holiday Edition
![]()
Since I’m going to be away for two weeks, I’m going to have a lot of free time. Therefore, it feels rather foolish to just have one artist featured in the final Recommend Me feature before the holiday, so I’m busting a gut and asking suggestions for not one, not two, but three artists. You know the rules by now – I reveal the bands, tell you what I know about them and make an appeal for recommendations in the comments below the article. I’ll then hunt down your recommendations, give them a listen and return with the results of my listening experience in due course. Here are the three artists I’ve chosen:
Since it appears that music is now stuck in the 1990s with Blur and Oasis both playing huge summer shows at the same time as each other and the spirit of Pulp being kept alive through Jarvis Cocker (albeit with his own solo material), I thought it would be better to get to know a band that have been very much kept under the radar in most people’s memories of the Britpop era (or that’s what it seems to me anyway) in the form of Suede. I know of them because at the time of me getting into alternative rock/indie rock they were running their course and on the road to splitting up. Other than that, I keep hearing of their great influence but haven’t really heard anything by them.
Norweigian dance has seemingly been dominated by the brilliance of Royksopp this past decade but in the shadows have lurked another Norweigian dance troupe called Datarock. I remember when they emerged a few years that the NME and other music publications were all over them, hyping them up as the next big thing. They then went quiet for ages and they returned once more just in time for The Great Escape (I saw their band name on a fair amount of TGE-related press releases). Part of me is left wondering what the hell I’ve missed and whether or not they really are as good as the media make them out to be.
Whenever I’ve spoken to people about Regina Spektor they always suggest to me, ‘Dude, have you heard of Fiona Apple?’ I respond by saying no and then they begin to tell me how brilliant she is and how her Grammy award wins are entirely justified. Having had a look at her Wikipedia page I’m not entirely sure whether or not Spektor and Apple are similar. Either way, I’ve been curious for a while, so now I think is the time to investigate further. She hasn’t released anything for a while, it seems, so now seems a good time to try and get into her music before any new album comes out.
As I said, leave your suggestions of the three aforementioned artists in the comments and I’ll have a look for them in preparation for my travels. Since I’m going to be away, any results of this will probably not be revealed for about three weeks so just be patient.

For Suede just have a listen to their compilation ‘Singles’. It has everything you need, Beautiful Ones, Animal Nitrate, Filmstar, Love the Way You Love and Stay Together.
For Datarock have a listen to Fa Fa Fa (big club hit), I Used To Dance With My Daddy, Give It Up and Computer Camp Love for some giggles. See them live if you ever get the chance, they are very very fun.
