Dinosaur Jr – Farm

Farm

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the formation of Dinosaur Jr. I imagine when the band decided to reform earlier this decade fans were worried that this would be yet another reunion that lacks soul and is only place to earn the band members money to pay for bills. Farm is an album that proves that bands like them can still make albums that you can enjoy listening to, no matter how long they’ve been going or however many reformations have occurred.

It surprises me that Farm is as decent as it is, considering that this is a record that doesn’t change the formula of Dinosaur Jr’s songwriting whatsoever. Guitarist J Mascis has written the majority of the songs on here bar Your Weather and Imagination Blind (written by bassist Lou Barlow) Apart from the sprawling I Don’t Wanna Go There, which is eight minutes long, much of this album is almost predictable in a sense, but in a good way. Pieces comes storming out of the blocks with a loud charge of power chords. The former is a true highlight and with a bit more of a melodic edge than some of the other noisier cuts whilst the latter is, unsurprisingly, bass heavy.

This is a hugely enjoyable, excitable and excellent album of heavy rock with no thrills or cheap effects. Dinosaur Jr are probably a band that doesn’t know how their sound could be best progressed so they stick to the loud and anthemic rock that they know. They probably could if they wanted to but it’s no great loss that they haven’t. This is just an alternative rock album that is better than a lot of other bands in the genre and yet it comes from a band that is over two decades old.
