Early Mercury Prize contenders revealed

The official nominations announcement isn’t for another month but bookmakers are already drawing up their predictions as to how might win this year’s Mercury Prize. The joint favourites hoping to follow the success of last year’s deserving winners Elbow are Little Boots and Doves. The former is a new contender to the ‘pop queen of the UK’ crown (if that crown was as bland as her music) whilst the latter is another Manchester band who have had critical adoration but not a lot of mainstream success. Could it be two years in a row for Mancunian underachievers? Bets are also being taken on La Roux, Florence And The Machine – both with albums as yet unreleased – and Bat For Lashes. I might be jinxing it but for crying out loud, just give it to Natasha Khan already and give her the success she deserves.
