New Music Round Up: 26th May 2009

Baby Venom

It’s a time for another promising new feature on The Musical Chairs. I’m going to quite a lot of gigs now and I try and make more effort than before to see support bands, especially in times where the best way to find out about new music is on the live circuit. With this in mind, here is a round up of recent support bands that I’ve seen:

Baby Venom:

Baby Venom (pictured above, courtesy of Crazy Bob) supported Deerhunter last week at Scala in London, and were the first band on. Their sound is very much synth rock and it has to be said that I didn’t think there was much power behind their sound. Their keyboards just didn’t sound as brutal and as intense as the rhythm that provided the backdrop for their songs, which was the best thing about their set. They were also pretty shy and withdrawn in stage banter which wasn’t helpful. In summary they were ok but not powerful enough.

Extra Life:

Red Light Company and Archie Bronson Outfit are both among the list of ‘worst support bands ever’. Extra Life can be be added to the list. This New York based band was essentially a whole load of noise without any real direction and it all ended up as one big mess. Even the electric flute solo in their first song, albeit impressive, was just pointless. In summary they are not as good as they think they are and far too complex.

Connan Mockasin:

Formerly known as Connan And The Mockasins, this New Zealand three-piece supported Metric last week at the Electric Ballroom. They were very unprepared although this was apparently due to troubles getting to the venue and so on. They have a very bluesy influence but their set never really flowed properly as Conan had to run backstage to get an instrument and then he badly cut his finger. In summary, not great but it would be cool to see them when they’re not unprepared.
