TGE 2009: Saturday evening roundup

This is the final straight! I could have been writing about The Joy Formidable but it turned out that the venue, JAM, was packed, so I took refuge at the Pavilion Theatre again for a couple of bands.
First up was Three Trapped Tigers. I didn’t know anything about them beforehand apart from it sounded like Battles, Aphex Twin and Sonic The Hedgehog (according to the official festival programme). I am not joking when I say they were the best discovery of my time in Brighton. It’s post rock for people who like the aggressive nature of bands like 65daysofstatic and Battles and I was literally transfixed by it all. So much so that I bought their EP off one of the band members. They’re playing with Crystal Antlers next week in London – if you have a chance to, go to that gig. You won’t be disappointed.
Up next was the band that I originally scheduled to see in the first place – School Of Seven Bells. The shoegaze/electro three-piece have just come hot off the heels of doing support slots with White Lies and Bat For Lashes and they definitely don’t show any signs of fatigue. Benjamin Curtis, their guitarist, even did most of the gig with one string less and I think even rejected a replacement guitar at one point. They won over a packed Pavilion Theatre crowd very easily though I didn’t think they were the best band there that weekend. Their set seemed like it lacked variation but with another album under their belts that might change.
