Five Songs: So stupid they’re brilliant

Every now and again an artist creates a song that is so stupid that you can’t help but like it. Sometimes it’s a good thing to escape the seriousness and angst-ridden songwriting for just insanely dumb wordplay. Here of five great examples of such songs:
The Divine Comedy – My Lovely Horse - Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy was the man responsible for creating the music for classic British sitcom, Father Ted. When the writers wanted Hannon to come up with a song that could be used in an episode where the main characters enter the Eurovision Song Contest, this was the brilliantly bizarre result.
The Beatles – Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da – The Beatles had plenty of silly songs, especially on The White Album, but perhaps this song – which The Offspring faithfully ripped off three decades later – tops the pile. I don’t think anyone really cares what the song actually means at all because they all want to do is sing the chorus refrain over and over again.
Ben Folds – Bitch Went Nuts – This is one of the standouts of Ben’s album that was released last year (Way To Normal) mainly because of its bluntness and frantic energy. This song about an ex-partner going completely crazy is profanity-filled but incredibly humorous.
Muse – Knights Of Cydonia – When Muse released Black Holes & Revelations in 2006, an album of misfires and masterpieces, they left their trump card at the very end. This six minute sci-fi rock triumph is their Bohemian Rhapsody and it has since been a staple of the band’s live sets.
Hot Chip – Wrestlers – Amidst all the soul-searching, party numbers and Sunday morning ballads, Wrestlers sits in the middle of Made In The Dark as a completely different but very fun song. It brings backs memories of my youth – watching WWE religiously and playing WWE video games constantly.
