Five Songs: Kids choirs

Colin Greenwood, Nigel Godrich and the Matrix Music School

The kids choir can be a dangerous thing sometimes and could potentially ruin a song. However, if used properly it can add another dynamic to a song. These are five of the best examples:

1. Dirty Harry by GorillazAmidst the blend of hip hop, techno, strings and rock, the refrain from the kids choir is unforgettable. The version from the Demon Days live DVD at the Manchester Opera House is possibly even better than the album version.

2. Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2) by Pink FloydA defiant moment from an album full of anger and rage hidden behind a carefully constructed rock opera (The Wall). Roger Waters has never been angrier than this song. The kids choir from Islington Green School also had a brief moment of fame.

3. Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem) by Jay-ZJay-Z took a sample of the kids cast of musical Annie singing Hard Knock Life and gave it a new and different lease of life in this brilliant cut from the album of the same name.

4. 15 Step by RadioheadIt’s really not much more of a contribution than more three shouts of “HEEEEEEEEY!” from students from the Matrix Music School & Arts Centre but when placed against the lyrics of Thom Yorke and the cut-up rhythms, it merely adds to a great opening song to a fantastic album.

5. Nothing To Worry About by Peter Bjorn & John – A lot of people I feel will find the kids chorus highly annoying but I find it delightfully strange. Besides, if Kanye West likes it, it must be good surely? It’s the first taster from their soon-to-be-released new album, Living Thing.
