Coldplay to release a free live album?

Coldplay are one of this summer’s big ‘stadium’ bands, even if their stadium shows in the UK aren’t until September. However, these gigs cost an absolute fortune nowadays. Chris Martin seems to recognise this and wants to give people who attend the shows a free gift in the way of a recording of the concerts that fans attend. He explains to The Sun:
We’re playing a lot of shows in the summer and I think what we would like to do is — bearing in mind the recession we are in — record the live album then give it as a gift. We are just trying to work out how to do that. It’s obviously a bit tricky in terms of record contracts and things but it would be great. It’s a way of saying thank you. It’s a tough economy and people are paying a lot of money for tickets.
I can see the big obstacle being record label approval (and that could be quite an immovable obstacle), but it is refreshing to see a big major label band actually realise that fans pay through the roof for these kind of shows and don’t take them for granted, even if they look like a Beatles tribute band circa Sgt. Pepper era.
