Five Songs: Past War Child albums

War Child Music

Tomorrow I’ll be giving my opinion on the brand new War Child CD, Heroes. So to celebrate this, here are five songs from past War Child albums that have jumped out at me for a variety of reasons – good or bad:

1. Lucky by Radiohead – From the original Help album and perhaps the most well-known song on the tracklist, this OK Computer classic was originally donated to War Child. When it came to recording OK Computer, they couldn’t improve it, so it was left unchaged.

2. House Of The Rising Sun by Muse – Not chosen because it’s brilliant, but to prove that some bands just can’t do covers. Muse completely ruin this classic by The Animals with its fast-tempo, swirling arpeggios and heavy, thrashing chords.

3. Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head by Manic Street Preachers – Most fans will recognise this as the first song recorded by the Welsh band following the tragic disappearance of bandmate Richey Edwards. It’s a lovely acoustic cover complete with trumpet solo.

4. Hong Kong by Gorillaz – Damon Albarn contributed this song to the 2005 War Child album, Help: A Day In The Life. Possibly one of the best Gorillaz songs it takes you on an imagery-rich and atmospheric journey through the neon-lit Asian streets.

5. The Present by Bloc Party – The last traces of Bloc Party in the Silent Alarm era, and perhaps their loosest song ever. Sounding like it was recorded in one take and perhaps not quite finished, it is one of the best songs from that period of their career.
