10 things about the Grammys 2009

So very late on Sunday night/Monday morning, I stayed up to watch the Grammy awards. This is the first time I have ever watched the ceremony. It will also be the last time. Never in my entire life have I seen a show that is so shoddy, offensive and downright awful in terms of music programming. Here are ten observations about this year’s ceremony:
1. U2 prove once again that they don’t need to have any nominations to play an awards show, as long as they’ve got an album to plug. This year is no exception.
2. Jennifer Hudson looked like she was wearing a baby bib. In danger of turning into a fashion blog, one of the worst costume moments I’ve ever seen.
3. Everything seems to be replacing God with Paul McCartney in their speeches. Is there something that religion doesn’t yet know?
4. Paul McCartney’s performance was a massive let down. At least play a good song!
5. Stevie Wonder…sometimes he is one of the most awe-inspiring musicians. But sometimes, he thinks bad ideas are good ideas, like teaming up with the Jonas Brothers.
6. Kanye West needs a haircut.
7. MIA…one of the standout performers of the evening and with an enormous baby bump. I still can’t believe she actually performed, that alone might be some miracle.
8. Robert Plant seemed to want to give mini-lectures about the songs he and Alison Krauss won awards for.
9. Justin Timberlake and T.I. bring on people carrying buckets for drums. That would have been a talking point had it not been the fact they were the performers after…
10. Radiohead. Jonny Greenwood, Thom Yorke (whose hair might even be growing out to emo stage) and a USC marching band perform 15 Step. In two words, nailed it.
