Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust – the best album of 2008

This was a quick and hectic album to make for the members of Sigur Rós. For a band so used to toiling over their own work, they and producer Flood changed their work patterns entirely and recorded their album in New York, London and Havana instead of their peaceful hometown of Reykjavík, Iceland. The result is an album that contains some of the best songs of their career and the best album of 2008. The usual long and epic symphonies were in there but were also bundled with uplifting anthems that were short and to-the-point without losing any of their trademark sound, but most of all, it’s brave and gutsy record. You couldn’t see them doing this sort of LP five years ago. Sigur Rós have gotten silly and light-hearted at the right time of their career. What follows after this is anyone’s guess.
Album highlights:
Gobbledigook – Their most freewheeling and cheerful song, and the closest thing to pop music.
Inní mér syngur vitleysingur – Exhilarating and stomping number that explodes with joy towards the end.
Við spilum endalaust – Exuberant brass arrangements drive this euphoric song all the way to its crescendo.
Festival – Majestic, sprawling and downright epic. It’s what Sigur Rós do better than anyone else.
Ára bátur – The best and most ambitious song they’ve ever put to tape, and the fact it was done in one live take makes it even more magical.
Why you should own this album in a sentence:
This is an album that has every kind of human emotion possible in the space of fifty five minutes and that is what makes it the best of 2008.
