Hot Chip at Brixton Academy

Hot Chip at Brixton Academy

Wow, Hot Chip have only just gone and performed one of the gigs of the year! I was expecting a decent show but I wasn’t expecting it to be so damn good…

Hot Chip were pretty much flawless tonight, apart from a couple of odd spots. The setlist was mainly drawn out of songs from their latest album, Made In The Dark. It is something that could disappoint some but it really doesn’t matter to me when they sound so damn good. Shake A Fist, as I expected it to be, was epic and Wrestlers was definitely one of the more unexpected moments of the night. A few songs off of The Warning were played including Over And Over (which went down a storm), And I Was A Boy From School and, one of the pleasant surprises of the evening, No Fit State.

The band have managed to enlist the help of a live drummer to add some meat to their sound. It definitely helped, especially on tracks like Shake A Fist, which are very much percussion driven. The band itself are now a powerful live outfit. The energy is there in abundance and they don’t need to do much to make this near-capacity crowd go insane. The crowd itself were easily one of the best of the year, making me think that to have a good time with good crowds I should go to see more dance acts.

So many other – the balloons released during main set closer Ready For The Floor (some even remain indestructible right up to the end, and I touched one!), lasers, the mass craziness that ensued during Over And Over, and perhaps most brilliant and heartwarming of all, after all the energy and excitement of the previous eighty minutes, the last hurrah – the tender and soft In The Privacy Of Our Love, but with an intro of Nothing Compares 2 U that has the masses swaying their arms aloft.

Hot Chip don’t need lasers and balloons, though it doesn’t hurt, because they are good enough on their own. A must see band.
