Tilly And The Wall at ULU

Tilly And The Wall

The person who recommended me to Tilly And The Wall in the first place was Bob of Crazybobbles fame. I saw that they were playing the ULU last night and thought it would be wise to check them out live. Before talking about them, I want to mention the support band, Slow Club, as they were excellent. I’ll write up some more about them at some point in the next few days but those guys have got some serious talent.

As for the headliners, the recommendation was a brilliant one. If you had to describe it one word, then it would be, quite simply, joyous. My first memory of this band was a few years ago when I stumbled across one track of theirs and being struck by how quirky, yet charming indie pop. Why I went so long without investigating further, in hindsight, is an unknown mystery.

The four-piece from Nebraska in Omaha, who released their latest album, O, last summer, are a seven-piece. They also have the benefit of having one of those members being a tap dancer, who contributes to most of the songs. Most people would dismiss this as a novelty, that doesn’t work, to try and seperate themselves from the rest of the pack.

However, this is far from the truth. If you want proof, go and see them whenever you can because the atmosphere is one of unabashed elation. The band transmit all their energy to the crowd effortlessly, as they played through an hour long set of fantastic pop, even coming out for an encore of two songs suggested by the crowd. The tap dancer herself was brilliant and her moves definitely worked well with the rest of the music. Infact, the whole band was flawless.

A band that deserves all the attention they can get. Unfortunately, the only remaining dates of their tour are in Ireland but here’s hoping they come back to the UK soon. Next time, they’re destined for a bigger audience.

The photo above is also from Bob of Crazybobbles (the rest are on his Flickr) – keep an eye on his blog because I imagine he’ll write some thoughts about the gig as well.
