Guilfest 2008

Better late than never, time for my thoughts from last Sunday at Guilfest. I think I’m going to keep this relatively brief.
The first band I saw was From The Jam. If you stick together the two people from The Jam who are not as famous as Paul Weller and a couple of tribute band members, that’s what you get. They were very well-received though and part of me wonders if they should have headlined, considering The Jam are without doubt the local area has ever produced. Halfway through, I headed to the Rocksound Cave to catch Frank Turner. Whilst his acoustic folk-style isn’t in anyway new, the songs are good and he had a very supportive crowd on his side.
After catching one song from Seth Lakeman, and part of another by the Australian Pink Floyd, I headed straight to the front of the Ents24 Stage for British Sea Power’s headlining set. Every year at Guilfest there seems to be one band that were so good, they beat everyone else by a country mile, and this was that band. A nicely mixed set of songs from the new album (Waving Flags, No Lucifer) and old favourites (Remember Me, Please Stand Up), and entertaining throughout. It’s just a shame that not enough people were around to see them close the festival.
You can find my photos from all five of the above artists on my Flickr here.
