Glastonbury 2008: The Armchair Verdict

Tents and the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury

Three days have come and gone incredibly quickly, and it’s made me think once again that it is one of the best festivals in the world. Below are a handful of acts I’ve chosen to comment on from what I’ve managed to see this past weekend:

Amy Winehouse – Sorry to start with a damp squid, but my God she was mullered. Yes, her voice may have sounded fine enough but the fact is that I felt terribly awkward at a lot of points throughout the concert, not least when she was muttering away in between songs.

Biffy Clyro – A great band to see perform whenever I’ve seen them on TV and it was no different here.

Hot Chip – Had the crowd in the palm of their hands on Saturday night.

Jay-Z – I’m still not that into his music to be honest but I definitely think he proved the doubters wrong. The response he got was immense and enough to shut up Noel Gallagher.

Kings Of Leon
– A total triumph. The best headliners of the weekend without any doubt. As soon as they started they just didn’t look back and the crowd loved them.

Massive Attack – A brilliant set consisting of new songs and classics. Angel sounded scary on such a big stage and the crowd lapped up Unfinished Sympathy.

The Raconteurs – Very tight on the Pyramid Stage on Saturday.

The Verve – Utterly atmospheric and uplifting, which was totally fitting for the final night. Their last four songs were just incredible and the new single, Love Is Noise, sounds fantastic live. I still don’t forgive them for that stupid chanting noise though.

But the real winner of this weekend was Glastonbury itself. For the first time in a while it had its backs against the wall and for once had a point to prove. Everything that could have gone right did go right. It’ll be interesting to hear will be said of the people who went their as they get back to their homes today, mud-ridden (though not too much) and in need of a long shower, but for now I would say this has Michael Eavis can be proud of what he’s put on this weekend.
