Five bands to watch at Glastonbury 2008

Lying down at Glastonbury

Tomorrow is the big kick-off date for Glastonbury. For us stuck at home this weekend, we’ll be sat at home late at night watching Jo Whiley and chums mull over the festival in some swanky backstage pad with logs for sofas and tree branches for microphones. However, once the BBC has put the performances up online/YouTube has the TV rips online, I urge that you catch these five bands regardless:

FRANZ FERDINAND – FRIDAY – THE PARK STAGE
They’ve only just announced their appearance today as punters were arriving at Pilton Farm, but this is a must-see event. The last time they played was in 2004 during their breakthrough year. Four years later, they’re set to play new material from next year’s third album and classics galore.

KINGS OF LEON – FRIDAY – PYRAMID STAGE

As the NME said in this week’s cover story, Kings Of Leon are one performance away from being the biggest underground band in the world. There are doubters, but having seen them fill Wembley Arena last December and dazzle in a place that I thought was just too big for them, this could be the highlight of the weekend potentially.

MASSIVE ATTACK – SATURDAY – OTHER STAGE
Massive Attack and Glastonbury is a combination that goes hand in hand. The politically active Bristol group will follow up their self-curated Meltdown Festival appearances with a moody headlining slot on the Other Stage. This is the only true alternative for Jay-Z haters on Saturday.

MY MORNING JACKET – SUNDAY – THE PARK STAGE
One of the most critically acclaimed live bands of the year so far and if the YouTube videos are what they make out to be, punters are going to have their heads blown off by the truly atmospheric and powerful sounds of this Kentucky-based band.

THE NATIONAL – SUNDAY – JOHN PEEL STAGE

One of the best US indie outfits around get a well-deserved headlining slot as they close the John Peel Stage. For me, this will no doubt be a preview of what to expect at Wireless a week tomorrow.

Hopefully, the BBC will air footage from all the above bands and will put up footage on their website next week. If not, there will be angry letters written.
